Books: Updates, Reviews and Why I don’t like Hardcover books

I finally found the time to update my list of books. I read quite a few since I added some to the list the last time. But I need to admit that I really don’t feel like writing a review for them. I should really start doing that as soon as finish one, would make a lot more sense, because it is still fresh in my mind. Maybe I do better with that in the future.

I started with the Game of Thrones series now. Actually this is nothing I would read or buy out of own ambition, but Nathan Fillion (actor, Castle, Firefly, Serenity…) speaks so excitedly about the series – also because of the TV show – that I just had to give it a try. I am in the middle of the first book and already come across one main problem I have with such books – too many people. I sometimes feel my head cannot deal with stories that tell around many people and their relationships to each other. It confuses me. But so far I pretty much like it, however, by now, I don’t understand the massive hype, yet.

I also still have Ken Follet’s Fall of the Giants in progress. I think I would already be through with it for a while if this wasn’t a huge and heavy hardcover book. I just cannot take it with me, it is too uncomfortable to hold in the train or bus, also it is hard to carry it around with me all the time, because of the weight. So far I like it better than Game of Thrones and wished I could read a lot more in it. But since I don’t have it with me, the only time I am able to read it is in the evenings and normally I am too tired to read many pages. Still I hope to finish it during the remaining time of my vacation.

Referring to the subject of this post: This is one of the reasons why I don’t like hardcover books. I mean alright, they look neat in the shelf, but for actual reading purposes they are just a pain. Also they are pretty expensive. In the Fall of the Giants case it wasn’t. It had the price of a paperback and I also expected a paperback. I didn’t read that it actually was a hardcover.
The only other books that I have in hardcover are mainly Sebastian Fitzek books, because I want those the moment they are released and nowadays they are released as hardcovers first. I read them within one night anyway and don’t have to carry them around.

In short: I am glad my list of books is up to date again and I still have quite a few on my SUB.

Japan and its people

It is 4am, I just spent 3 hours on researching Japanese social behaviour and my head is spinning. Yes I have to admit I want to find out what Máté fascinates in Japan and Japanese women and I need to find out more (and I obviously cannot go ahead and send him a facebook message like: What’s the Japan thing?).
Maybe I am too selfish or feminist or whatever, but what I am reading makes me vomit. Seriously. I wished Japanese people were a lot more than their Anime characters. Seriously live it, don’t dream it!

I am planning on writing a blog entry on what I found out and read and what my thoughts are. I am aware many things may just be clichés, still if a lot of people report it, some living in Japan for years, there must be some kind of truth in it.

So far, to the Japanese women: You do not live to raise children and make your husband a good life. No No No! Also your husband can stay at home and be good to the kids, you have the right to do whatever you want. Fuck it, go out and live your freaking life and don’t live to other people’s expectations! It is one of the worst things you can do. Damn hell, I had to go through therapy to realise that and how much I lost because of it. How can anyone willfully live up to that? And most importantly how can a man accept and support that? Gender equality, anyone? How can anybody be happy with that?

I also know the cultures and traditions are different, went through different developments and what not, but seriously it is the year 2011! I don’t want to make anyone lose their traditions and connections to it, but some stuff is really beyond my understanding.

And I want to add the following (because if someone stumbles over that post, I may get angry comments):
I am somehow fascinated by Japan, its tradition, the differences to Europe/Germany, the language and well yeah I love the animes. That is all incredible interesting material and awesome, but I am talking about every day life here, which I find a bit troubling.

If there is anyone out there (Japanese, or Non-Japanese with Japan experience o.O) and is willed to answer my questions, please contact me, because I really want to know more and understand it. Maybe I am just getting a totally wrong image, reading the wrong pages, don’t know. As I said another blog entry will follow with the stuff that I have trouble with most and maybe someone will be able to help me out understanding.
